Food Allergy TREATMENT. There is hope!

Oral Immunotherapy Program Overview for Peanut,Milk, Egg & Wheat food allergies -As of March 2011- Changes have occurred in the program since that date.

Dr. Richard L. Wasserman, M.D., Ph.D. of Dallas Allergy Immunology offers oral immunotherapy treatment for patients with the life-threatening food allergies mentioned above. It is 1 of only a handful of full treatment programs in United States. This is not a clinical trial.

The following is an excerpt from his website

ORAL IMMUNOTHERAPY PROGRAM OVERVIEW

DallasAllergyImmunology is pleased to announce a new oral immunotherapy program that provides a long-term solution for wheat, egg, peanut and milk allergic patients. At the end of this 5-6 month program patients with wheat, egg, peanut or milk allergy will be able to consume these foods with no allergic reactions. The program introduces minute doses of wheat, egg, peanut or milk in solution over a period of three to four months. The program then progresses to small doses of the whole food for an additional two to three months, resulting in tolerance to these foods allowing the children to consume wheat, eggs, peanuts and/or milk without any adverse reactions.

We have a number of children who have graduated from the program and are now eating eggs, and peanuts or drinking milk without reactions. This program is designed for a child of school age or older who will be old enough to understand the reasons for participating and be actively engaged in the process.  (end of excerpt)

Hi Julie,

Thank you for maintaining this blog. We just discovered that our 13-month old son is allergic to peanuts. We were given the ok from our pediatrician to introduce peanuts/nuts and after his second direct ingestion of peanut butter he broke out into hives. We find hope in your experience and everything that we've been reading about immunotherapy recently.

Can you tell me if they are administering Xolair (prescription-drug) along with the peanut doses? Or does the treatment involve only the ingestion of peanuts in increasing amounts?

Thank you so much.

Best,
Mario

Hi Mario.
You are up late (if you are in the U.S.
I am sorry to hear of your son's peanut allergy. My son was diagnosed at 22 months.
This new treatment is working. Alexander's dose just increased today to 12 peanut per day divided into 2 doses.
As for your question. No Xolair is not being administered. Only peanuts. Read my post from Dec 2nd, 2010 about Treatment Day 1. This may help a little. Thanks for your post. I really want to help others in the same situation.

Is this treatment working for somebody that experienced a anaphylactis shock when younger (1 year old, now he is five and still allergic to eggs)?

It's so amazing that there is an allergy treatment in Idaho. I thought that I'd never be able to eat peanut butter, ever. Thank you for sharing!

Dear Fred,
I am glad to hear there is treatment where you live. It is rare to find. Someday treatment will go mainstream. I think it will be a while.
Blessings

This is a good initiative to get rid of allergies. Now the people in US (where allergy is the 5th leading disease) will surely heave a sigh of relief.

Hi Julie,

I have visited your site a few times now, and every time i read about your son it gives me hope. I have a four 1/2 year-old son who is severely allergic to peanuts (and to a lesser extent, to soy, corn, egg white). He is also allergic to dust mites and has eczema.

My problem is that we live in Brisbane Australia, and to my knowledge, peanut allergy has not arrived here yet. I feel like I'm running against time, and have considered more than once moving to the US for 1/2 a year so Ryan can get treatment.

Hope you and your family stay well. God bless you. Claudia

Dear Claudia,
You are so kind to post your comment. It is heart wrenching at times when your child has a peanut allergy. I am sure you feel this way for Ryan.
You may consider a trip here with Ryan to consult with Dr. Wasserman.
You could email them and ask if that would be helpful in terms of making a decision to come here for treatment. Perhaps request a phone discussion with him or Skype session.
I know many people have travelled a great distance to get treatment. Some have moved here temporarily.
Feel free to keep in touch.
I am here to help.

Hi,

I hope all is well with you. Healthline just published an infographic detailing the effects of anaphylaxis on the body. This is an interactive chart allowing the reader to pick the side effect they want to learn more about.

You can see the overview of the report here: http://www.healthline.com/health/anaphylaxis/effects-on-body

Our users have found our guide very useful and I thought it would be a great resource for your page: http://justalittlepeanut.blogspot.com/p/there-is-hope.html

I would appreciate it if you could review our request and consider adding this visual representation of the effects of anaphylaxis to your site or sharing it on your social media feeds.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I have a 21 month old who is allergic to peanuts, we have already introduced the desensitization but have hit multiple roadblocks due to he will now not ingest anything with peanuts. The minute he tastes, or gets the tingling sensation that is associated with his allergy he spits out whatever is in his mouth. Causing contact hives and such, also I have no idea how much he actually ingests. I don't know what to do! I have tried peanut butter, the peanut puffs and we have now graduated to a tiny bit of peanut powder (I had to start over with a 1/8 tsp). I have been able to get him to drink some from a smoothie but now he won't drink smoothies! I'm at a loss and so frustrated.

Hi Amy,
Are you trying to desensitize your child youself? Or under supervision by an allergist experienced in this field?

Food allergies seem to be on the rise and common ones include peanuts, strawberries and shellfish. Normally the body's immune system kicks in when it views a substance as harmful. An immune response occurs to fight the invader. When food allergies develop, the immune system views a particular food as harmful and reacts. The reaction can be measured, or more severe. Eating the food item triggers release of chemical signals such as histamine that lead to symptoms. In some cases, symptoms can be life threatening.. I'm consulting web health network for treatment of food allergy and I hope you also can be benefited with there help.
